From the looks of it some of you have only heard a dozen albums this year.

Amending my previous post. A World Lit Only By Fire is now my top of 2014.

The new Aeges album, Above And Down Below, is terrific.

I also picked up the new Foxygen record, ...And Star Power. Fuck me running, that is a great release, against all odds. 2xLP or 2xCD, 82 minute roller coaster of disjointed sounds and fragmented songs. Incredible. Could take the #1 spot out of the blue...

My list is brief because I haven't had time to check out too much stuff this year. I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I missed out on, but I'll catch up eventually.

Here are the only 2014 albums I really had in heavy rotation:

1. Jack White -- Lazaretto
2. Budos Band -- Burnt Offering
3. Ty Segall -- Manipulator
4. Tune-Yards -- Nikki Knack
5. Mayhem -- Esoteric Warfare
6. Fu Manchu -- Gigantoid
7. Aphex Twin -- SYRO

Oh, and I'm still really looking forward to Ty Segall and Aeges albums this year. Both will probably make the list. If the Ty Segall album is anywhere as good as people are saying that it is, it's top three material, and a contender for my #1 spot.

The Ty Segall album has a bunch of great songs, but it also has a lot of songs that feel like filler. It didn't need to be a double album, but I still highly recommend it.

I tried the new Foxygen album a few times and it never grabbed me. I was a fan of their last one, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, but this one felt unfocused and haphazard. Sometimes that approach works fine for me, but so far I haven't really been able to get into it.

Only several things really caught my ear this year - new blood farmers, Wretch material, and the promise of a new Pagan Altar album.

Yob continues to stand out leagues above everything else.

That said, a handful of other albums have finally got me interested.

Inter Arma, Pallbearer, Lo Pan, Dwellers, Witch Mountain, Beck, Monolord, and Nachtmystium have made it into my rotation with varying degrees of regularity.

I hear you about the Foxygen, Josh. I read early reviews and descriptions, and was honestly prepared not to like it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE 21st Century Ambassadors, that's a killer album, though this new one is something else to me. It's like that feeling I got when I first heard Ween, there's just something so...freeing about it. Yeah, it's a glorious, scattered disjointed mess, and a double album. There's nothing on paper about it that I SHOULD like, and yet I can't get enough of it. It's just got that...something...that does it for me on some deep level. Can't place it. The songs were better on 21st Century Ambassadors, most certainly, though it just never reached me in the way this one does. I don't really get it, though when I listen to this album, everything is right in the world...
