That is going to be a bitch of a contract to have to pay off. And everyone is bitching about Arod being owed $63 millions dollars; he's at least available to pinch hit.

Astros are starting to resemble a mediocre/poor MLB team by signing Ryan Vogelsong and Colby Rasmus to contracts today. Man, they're probably going to shatter the MLB strikeout record by adding Rasmus to that lineup. Someone on MLB Network mentioned that if somehow their young starting pitching holds up, they'll have a punchers chance in most of the games they play in. I don't know if being .500 is in the cards for them, but it'll be the closest they've been to that number in a long damn time.

It would be interesting if DC ended up standing pat with their starters, but would they put Roark back into the bullpen? The guy was bad-ass last year (I had waiver wired him onto both of my teams last year). Or put Gio there? Scherzer, Zimmermann, Strasburg, Fister and Gio/Roark. The rotation is sick.

Pretty good article from Rolling Stone (of all places) on the top 15 worst owners in USA sports. Some of our favorite punching bags are in there from MLB among the other major sports. I learned some stuff. I do think the hatred for Daniel Snyder over the "Redskins" name is pretty overblown, but the guy from all reports appears to be a grade-A asshat as far as meddling and being a pretty shitty human, which this article glosses over.

http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/lis ... s-20141125

Also I saw that FanGraphs is projecting the Mariners to have the highest win total in the American League this year. Is it time for me to get excited?

Interesting article on the owners. Snyder and Loria definitely deserve the top 2 spots.

I haven't, but I hope it's true. Tropicana Field is an abomination to baseball.

I read that the TB owner had threatened to move the team if the local government didn't do anything about a new stadium for them (which I believe they have since voted against) and Montreal was a location that he mentioned. I haven't heard anything about their being anything more to it than that.

The Rays to MTL rumors are certainly gaining momentum. Not a peep locally around here (Portland), which is disappointing, because you can pretty much guarantee the Rays are out of Tampa within the next 5-10 years.

As much as the new commissioner has made noises about outlawing defensive shifts, I really hope it doesn't happen. Let the game evolve to beat it! I like the purity of the game; having nine guys on the field. Let them play wherever.

Agreed on all points. The metagame surrounding the shift will change on its own. It really puts the screws to big pull hitters, but guess what? It's supposed to! It's not like the shift is some super overpowered cheat. It's not even that difficult to play around. Teach these guys that get shifted on how to bunt down the opposite line and see how often they get shifted on then.

or how about just teach them how to be patient and hit. guys like geroge brett, wade boggs, tony gwynn and paul moliter were good hitters because they would slap the ball anywhere they wanted to hit it. its called place hitting. the art of it seems to be lost.

Rockies sign Kyle Kendrick. Better than having to trade players for Dillon Gee, but I fully expect Kendrick is going to get rocked this season. Possibly to epic proportions. At least, for himself, he's making $5.5 million dollars in the process because he might be lucky to find himself a major league job next year now.

James Shields apparently going to San Diego for under $80MM. I wonder that happened to the $110MM deal he had on the table? Anyway, NL West is going to be interesting. I kind of think this actually will have the biggest impact of all the moves the Padres have made so far.

The first Vegas win total over/unders should be coming out this week. i always look forward to this.

Really good article about the worst contracts in MLB. A Mariner's blog had a posting last week about how Seattle has been one of the luckiest teams in MLB the last few years as they took pretty big swings on Fielder, Josh Hamilton and now Victor Martinez in this offseason and missed on them all. All are being (or in the case of V-Mart, he should be) considered among the worst contracts in MLB presently and none of them on the Seattle payroll. I guess we'll see how the Nelson Cruz contract works out.

http://grantland.com/features/worst-mlb-contracts-2015-alex-rodriguez-ryan-howard-prince-fielder/

ESPN had an interview with Manfred the new Commisioner today and he mentioned that taking PEDs out of the game has made it a younger game, which is a good point. You really gotta be careful committing big bucks to guys north of 30 now. At least for position players.

Sure looks like Shields overplayed his hand a little bit. I wonder who the mystery team with the $110 offer was. I'd imagine it would have to be a team like the Rockies for him to not be kicking himself right now for passing it up. Not that SD and $75 million is anything to sneeze at. But an extra $35 million is is an extra $35 million.

With everything SD has done this offseason, I still don't expect too much from them. They'll be much better next year than they have been for years, but I still wouldn't be surprised if they can't even net themselves a wildcard ticket intio the playoffs. I am kinda expecting them to be this years edition of the 2013 Toronto Blue Jays. If they have the balls to move Kemp over to 1B so that a) he doesn't have to be a liability in LF and b) Myers can shift to LF and not be a liability in CF I might reconsider my thoughts on them.

I did read that SD is looking into the latest sensation from Cuba,SS Yoan Moncada. That would be quite the coup for them if they could land him but I doubt they can outbid the LA's and NY's.

Yeah, he'll be okay. I really think it's a big score for the Padres. I don't think KC ever gets a whiff at the playoffs without that guy's arm and clubhouse presence for all the young guys they have on their staff. I wouldn't be surprised to see KC and San Diego completely switch win/loss records this year.

It's also been noted a lot, but Shields was basically traded for Wil Myers and now they're both on the same team, just two years later!

A ESPN wonk in a chat this week said the $110MM figure Shields was rumored to get was a complete agent fabrication. Makes sense, given how much lower he ended up getting.

I can't believe Toronto ran Josh Donaldson through arbitration today. That team has thrown around a lot of cash the last few years, so you'd think they would cough up the extra million or whatever to keep that guy 100% on board and feeling welcome.

Rickie Weeks to apparently play the OF in Seattle for $2MM. Interesting. Hopefully it works better than the Corey Hart experiment did. Eventually Jack Z is going to run out of these second chance guys he originally signed in Milwaukie. Maybe we'll eventually end up with Ryan Braun!

Really good segment on MLB Network tonight with Adam Ottavino about playing in Denver.

Atlantis Casino published their win totals yesterday:

Nationals 93
Dodgers 91
Cardinals 87.5
Angels 87.5
Tigers 86.5
Red Sox 86
Pirates 85.5
Mariners 85
Giants 85
Orioles 84.5
Padres 84
Blue Jays 83.5
Royals 83
Athletics 82.5
White Sox 82
Marlins 81.5
Cubs 81.5
Mets 81
Indians 81
Yankees 80
Brewers 80
Reds 79
Rays 77.5
Rangers 76.5
Braves 73.5
Astros 73.5
D'backs 72.5
Rockies 70.5
Twins 68.5
Phillies 67

The Sportsbook Director said this was one of the toughest seasons for him to handicap. "It took so much more research this year, because there are just so many teams with question marks. Normally, there's six teams that you figure pretty much should make the playoffs, and six teams that aren't going to make the playoffs. This year, outside of the Nationals, every team has questions. And not that I don't have questions about the Nationals, but it's a very weak division (NL East) and they go six starters deep."

Looks like Donaldson lost his arbitration hearing.

And speaking of Toronto, I think I would vote for them to go over the 83.5. And I might go under the 84.5 for Baltimore. I'd probably also take the over for the Mets and Rockies too.

Here are the numbers from the Westgate Superbook (previously the Vegas Hilton). They're numbers are much more sharp and usually move constantly so both sides of the action remain at -110. They're the only book in Vegas that works like this, the rest of them gradually raise and lower the moneylines until they get around -150 before the actually change a total. The Superbook agrees with your assessment that Atlantis' number for Baltimore is too high.

Arizona 72
Atlanta 73.5
Baltimore 81.5
Boston 86
Chicago Cubs 82.5
Chicao White Sox 81.5
Cincinnati 78
Cleveland 84.5
Colorado 71.5
Detroit 84.5
Houston 75.5
Kansas City 79.5
Los Angeles Angels 89.5
Los Angeles Dodgers 92.5
Miami 81.5
Milwaukee 78.5
Minnesota 71.5
New York Mets 81.5
New York Yankees 81.5
Oakland 80.5
Philadelphia 68.5
Pittsburgh 83.5
San Diego 85.5
San Francisco 84.5
Seattle 87.5
St. Louis 88.5
Tampa Bay 79.5
Texas 78.5
Toronto 82.5
Washington 93

Yu Darvish might need TJ surgery.

After the year Texas had last season, this is a cruel way to start 2015.

And now Cliff Lee is having more problems with his elbow. No word on the severity, but in light of the fact that he was experiencing elbow problems last year this is certainly bad news.

Sorry, Frog. Not that this is the cause, but it looks like you get to experience what I have been dealing with the past couple years following the Rockies. At least bad baseball is better than no baseball.

That is another reason why I get the baseball package. The $180 price tag is well worth it.

David Ortiz is the DH for my team and the shift exists mainly due to him, right? I still think banning it is retarded.
