I bought some Fireside Chat just because of the nice box and it said "Winter Spiced Ale". I love those kinds of beers. It was expensive at $10 for a 6pack but it's really really good. I can't remember the last time I drank a beer out of a can either. Weird for a better beer but whatever.
The "spice" is very noticeable unlike a lot of other micro seasonals I've tried.

Wow desertblues, don't know the exact exchange rate for the Oz$, but 27 for a Mikkeler is insane. Some of them are 7-8 euros here. Good beers, but that is somewhat over my budget too.

Funny how IPA's from the more well-known American breweries are about as expensive (sometimes even cheaper) than the 'local' microbrews.

That beer is actually made by Brew Dogs in Scotland which may explain the price.

Our microbreweries are taxed heavily in comparison to our wines so they're fighting above their weight division.

Speaking of insane prices. Another beer from Brew Dogs:

Quote:
Their Paradox series uses oak barrels from Scotch whisky distilleries to mature the Imperial Stout (10 per cent) and impart subtle nuances from the different whisky styles. When they launched an 18 per cent oak-aged stout named Tokyo in 2009, it caused a ruckus in the Scottish Parliament, where a motion was proposed to ban it because of its high alcohol. Then along came Tactical Nuclear Penguin, at a whopping 32 per cent, which tastes more like a whisky than any beer I've ever encountered. This brew is matured in oak barrels for 14 months, then frozen several times, with ice removed to concentrate the alcohol to stratospheric levels. Selling for $140 a 330-millilitre bottle, Tactical Nuclear Penguin comes with its own stopper and Barker recommends drinking it over a five- to six-week period.

Tactical Nuclear Penguin (32 per cent)
Dark reddish-brown, suggestion of foam dies immediately. Aroma: intense cocoa and Vegemite notes, hot alcohol. Palate: Vegemite and hot spirit notes at first; rummy/molasses-laden mid-palate is soon drowned by the warming alcohol. Overall: like sipping stout essence.

Ah, it's one of those Mikkeler / Brew Dog co-ops. I had another one not too long ago. That was one that cost 7 or 8 euros. A friend of mine bought that Nuclear tactical penguin, and he's still looking for an excuse to sample it.

There's a Dutch brewery (Emelisse) that made a Russian Imp. Stout (I guess, they all called them 'Black') which they then aged on several whisky barrels to add different tones to it. We were on a beer tasting in September (De Molen brewery) and a colleague of Billsbrother had one of them, I had another. I could definitely make out the 'Islay' in mine, but the beer was way too goddamn sweet. They all were 10.5%. Their Imperial Doppelbock was very tasty too, also too sweet, so I bought two large bottles and I leave them to age for a year or two. That one is 11.5%.

Love the 'Isaly' and agree I don't want my beer to sweet. If I want sweet I'll go for a fortified.

speaking of Russian Stout! I'm sippin' one of these:
It's from North Coast Brewing. California.
It's real good stuff

From the the brewery:" Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia's Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It's a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout
Color: Black
ABV: 9%
Bitterness: 75 IBU's"

Was on the local last night - Bath Ales 'Festivity', xmas special porter, good depth of flavour, much better out the tap than in a bottle.

Went on to next pub and had the Wychwood seasonal 'Bah Humbug', pretty unremarkable, but then I've got a cold so my tastebuds aren't fully functioning.

Finished with a 'Revival' from some Salisbury plain brewery, forget which, very bright citrusy 3.8 percenter, yum.

Doing Toohey's Extra Dry tonite, affectionately known as TEDs by most kids in Australia.

A no shit working class heavy beer that goes down hella sweet. Not too bitter, but you def know you're knocking back a bitter beer. 5% alc. vol and a crisp clean taste.

One of the few beers with a picture of the factory it's made in on the label!

Actually, my bottles look a lot different.

They only have the little label at the top of the neck, and it is designed more like the bottom oval pic with the grey elephant.

There is no label at the bottom, and instead it it thickly embossed with the word "Carsberg" in the glass itself.

Had the neighbors over for dinner awhile back and one left some Dogfish Chicory Stout. Having one now; I'm ambivalent about the taste.

Big fan of Rogue's Mocha Porter. And any/all pale ales and IPAs.

I'm not a big IPA guy, but I've had that Mocha Porter and it is indeed delicious. Any Saison Dupont fans around?

Saison Dupont is very delicious as is their winter saison Avec Les Bon Veux.

Had a Dogfish Chicory Stout on draft last night and it was decent. Nothing too amazing. I'd have another one, but wouldn't seek it out, I guess.
