It's totally a great pils.
My opinion of the rest of Shiner's beer is not so high but the 101 is tits.

I'll have to try it next time I'm somewhere that sells the stuff. Can't get Shiner in NJ...

Just got back from my first day on the slopes in over 2 years but before I got back I stopped and picked up some of that Coconut Porter that Spiritualleader's been raving about. Gonna start on one of those guys as soon as the Eagles game starts.

Can't say I am much of a fan of it, personally. Not bad, just not really my cup of tea. I am not a coconut fan to begin with (outside of those girl scout cookies) so maybe this shouldn't be much of a surprise.

I love coconut, but coconut doesn't really make me think 'I should try that!' It's probably not available here, so I won't have the urge easily. Although I think there is a fair trade brewery that has both a coconut and a banana beer that's on sale here.

i tried a banana beer once. the initial burst of banana was great but it settled into a weird after taste that i didnt like..

The Rochefort Abbey of St-Remy has suffered a great fire last night. A large stock of beer has been destroyed in the fire. Apparently the brewery didn't suffer much, so they can resume brewing soon.

Heard about that last night, Shaytan.
I'll be drinking a Rochefort 10 in support - it's the least I can do!

Report said they'd resume brewing next week and also mentioned the batch of 10 that was fermenting was saved. Also, all monks got out safely.

If you happen to be wandering around in the cold and snow of downtown Denver tonight we're putting on Meph Addict (Mephostopheles Stout - 18%abv with espresso beans added) and Rumpkin (pumpkin beer aged in a Gosling rum barrel), both from Avery Brewing.

Stopped by Avery yesterday and had a wonderful Brett IPA (hope they make this a regular brew, think of Orval blended with a nice IPA), also had a Rosemary IPA. Very good, rosemary was fairly subtle, but definitely there. I might have two of them, but not sure I'd reach for one on a regular basis.

I'll get a collection of Orval and Rocheforts tomorrow, to stock. And all the Texels Stormbock (9.5%) the shop still has. Apart from being bad ass strong, it's very tasty too.

Had some Rogue's Dead Guy Ale after work tonight. Had it once before years ago and don't think I was a huge fan, but dug it this time around.

Went for those beers on New Year's Eve... the shop owner had gotten a box of a ltd edition of Jopen brewery from Haarlem. Most of their beers are a tat too sweet, but I'll always try something new. Guy decided not to put it on sale, but hand it out to regular customers that proved to be lovers of special brews. So I got one bottle free of Jopen Masterpiece 2011: a Rye Imperial Russian Stout. 10% rich American hop flavor (chinook and sterling hops), nice roast flavor of the roasted rye malt. I'll ask about a bigger supply next. Best before May 2014, so good to store.

Yummy

I totally agree that Guinness tastes like piss, but that sounds like a waste of good whisky, even of bad whiskey.

EDIT: and happy New Year Jenn and Tom

Hell Yeah, JJB and DD!!!

Happy New Year!

I was amazed at your NYEve collection then started to recognize some of them brews...then I recognized some of them pics and realized I drank a couple of those there beers. We had a Cantillon Lou Pepe? Hmmm, that looks like my arm in that pic, so we must've. That's a damn fine beer. Such a great night of beer drinking. Epic.

For those that care (nobody):
That Meph Addict was pretty damn good and way more drinkable than you'd expect from an 18+% beer. I ended up blending it with Young's Double Chocolate Stout and that was outstanding. Kinda like drinking a yummy, mocha coffee beer.

Tonight I busted into my stash of Short's Brewing beers.
Had the Abnormal Genius (brewed with sunflower seeds and honey) - nice, but nothing overwhelming.
Also had the Woodmaster (double brown brewed with maple syrup and toasted pecans) - killer!

DD, listening to a collection of the funk tunes I've acquired from you.
np: Joe Quarterman and Free Soul - Find Yourself
nd: Oskar Blues Ten Fidy Imperial Stout
