Firestone Walker is one of my personal favorite breweries. I love much of what I have tried from them, including both Double Jack and DBA. Union Jack, Opal, and Parabola are my favorites from them though.

The only beers I was less than impressed with was their Reserve Porter and Velvet Merkin. Neither were bad, just not up to their standards, IMO.

I've only ever managed to track down one bottle of Firestone Walker, it was the DBA and I got it in Berlin of all places

If I see that I'm definitely getting it. As I said previously, I love Sixpoint Bengali.

Really looking forward to getting some Green Flash, Founders and Bear Republic from the tap. You guys don't know how lucky you are!

Last night's drinking while catching up with Gotham and Homeland on TV for me:

Brewdog Jackhammer

A really drinkable, strong and bitter IPA. Really tasty and readily available in supermarkets here.

I'm noting all these down, I just realised Beer Authority has Great Divide, Oskar Blues and Harpoon stocked too. At this rate I'm going to be too drunk to see any sights.

Can you explain the different measures to me. I'm used to dealing with pints (568 ml), half pints (284ml) and 2/3 pints (378ml). If I was to order a beer here it would usually be a pint, depending on abv.

16 ounces (oz) = 1 pint.

The pint is the standard draft pour at bars. However, with craft beer bars offering so many higher abv beers, they generally offer plenty of smaller pours. But how bars choose to size their pours is up to them.

cool, thanks

That's pretty much how it is here, anything over 6.5% comes in either half or 2/3.

Yeah, I lot of the bars here pour high end beers in different/specific glassware. I think the 25cc pour is actually pretty standard on a lot of them.

Distributed only in Michigan, Short's is one of the best kept secrets.

So fucking good, and only 5%. And Clutch inspired, if that matters.

Ommegang is from NY State (Cooperstown) but not New York City. I only bother making that correction so that Mickey67 doesn't make any plans for a brewery visit while there. But I am a fan of Ommegang's as well. Not quite a favorite of mine, but I enjoy much of what they do.

My favorite NY brewery is definitely Sixpoint. I think they are based out of Brooklyn, so a taproom visit there is probably doable.

Oops, my bad, thanks for the correction.

We've been lucky to have them out here in Denver a few times. They bring a shipment for GABF and I buy as much Huma Lupa Licious IPA as I can.

Another Michigan secret is Right Brain Brewing in Traverse City.

My wife loves Right Brain. They brew beer with entire pies thrown in. Blueberry, apple, etc. and their brewpub is very cool. And they have these weird waffle sliders that were delicious. None of their beers blew me away when we were there, but all were good. We are planning to go back again, maybe this weekend, as we are going to be snowmobiling about an hour from Traverse City. Definitely going to Shorts for dinner Saturday.

Jealous. Short's has good food too.
I know they were going to expand into the hardware store next door and have the hardware store move across the street. Has any of that happened yet?

Give you a full report after tomorrow. Don't remember much about our visit there last year. Place seemed big, crowded, but we walked in and sat at the bar. Probably got lucky.

New Brewery in town, 'Half Full', has an assortment of Ales on tap in their tasting room. I got a few growlers for myself ;)

I want one of those 'Speidel Braumeister' homebrew mash units!

So much easier and more efficient.

Had an excellent time in NYC, though five days is probably enough for me. Everything seemed so expensive, loud and brash and I couldn't keep track of what I was spending. Food portion sizes were also outrageously large. I would be financially ruined and fat if I stayed any longer.

Beer wise it was amazing. To be able to go into a bar and be confronted with anything between 20 and 60 beers on draught is something that is so alien to me.

My favourites tended to be between Dogfish Head or Founders (All Day IPA is one of the best beers I've ever had). Dogfish Head is impossible to get in to the UK, so that was brilliant to finally get my hands on and I sampled a few!. Their 90 Minute IPA was especially excellent. I also enjoyed Bells Two Hearted Ale and Founders Dark Penance -- I love a Black IPA. I also had my first Alesmith beer (IPA) and my first Great Divide (Titan), Firestone Walker (Wookey Jack) and Bear Republic (Racer) from the tap. Also I must mention Stone's Smoked Porter with Chocolate & Orange Peel.

Went to a few good bars too when I wasn't sight seeing. Draught 55, Beer Authority, Iron Lounge and Brooklyn Diner were all good in their own unique ways. The worst place I went to was TGI Friday's on Wall St.

All in all, mad, massive, crazy expensive city that's home some truly wonderful places and probably the best beer I've ever had. Though I couldn't believe the amount of people drinking Bud Light when they have all of these beers to choose from.

Yeah, NYC is a great place, but very expensive.
Glad you got to try so many new beers. It's fun being confronted by so many great choices.

After numerous enjoyable sessions with Prairie Standard, I might have come around to your thinking on this. Always loved it and now might have to give it the nod over Prairie Hop.

Managed to get a Space Rock while in Michigan recently. Great beer.

Another surprisingly great beer was the Stone Delicious IPA I had last night. It's one of those gluten-reduced beers, but for the first time it didn't taste like it at all. Hopped with Lemondrop hops, which you definitely notice and El Dorado.
