Feel the same way about Unwritten. Read the first two volumes and there are a lot of great ideas but I don't feel the story as a whole. Havn't given up yet but it didn't grip me like Fables or Scalped.

I read comics as a kid, and got back into comics about 5 years ago. I like super hero books, as well as everything else. I especially like Jonathan Hickmans stuff right now - his Fantastic Four work, Manhattan Projects, etc. Also really enjoying, Rachel Rising, JH Williams art on Batwoman, Saga, Glory, etc etc.

Kind of embarrassed to admit but I've never read Watchmen. Starting it tomorrow. I have some reluctance to read Alan Moore, a combination of him seemingly like a smug douche and not possibly living up to the hype of his work.

I would actually like to see the Watchmen comic rewritten to include the movie's device of resolution. Comic nerds that argue that Moore's MacGuffin is better than the movie's resolution are flat out wrong.

Meh. Moores resolution worked better in comic form than movie form.

I'm referring to the actual device used. Spoilers below.

Stop reading, audiodork.

Snyder's idea of "framing" (for lack of a better term) Dr. Manhattan is an eloquent conclusion to the story instead of Moore's telepathic papier-mache monster.

Speaking of Red Son, the first issue is on sale over at comiXology for $1, along with a bunch of other first issues.

And if anyone was looking to get into The Walking Dead, now would be a good time to do so. Can't stress enough how much better the comic is than the show, at least so far.

Anyone else following the main Batman book? Death of the Family started this week and it's off to a pretty great start. I'm just hoping Snyder can stick the conclusion. Court of Owls started off great but the ending was a little flat. I didn't hate it nearly as much as other people seem to, but the payoff wasn't as good as the build-up.

I used to be really into them, but haven't bought a new book in 15 years, easy. The last thing I read & the thing I'd be most likely to buy is Civil War. For some reason, I always wanted a copy of Uncanny...350 where they put Gambit on trial & leave him in Antarctica or whatever pole.

A friend who adores Dark Avengers loaned me the 1st 10, but I didn't get into it. When I was really into books, I was big on anything Miller & Moore. Not reading Alan Moore for any reason defeats the whole purpose of reading comics. Many authors & artists have claimed that they tore up whatever they were doing & started over once they read Watchmen; with good reason, I might add.

I sold 25 long boxes at a garage sale a few years back for $125. Back issues are garbage anymore anyways. The only back issues I've still got are the Miller Daredevils, the Moore Swamp Things, & stray fun stuff like the Simonson Beta Ray Bill story arc in Thor, some early Avengers, Sin City books, some X-Men, some silver age, & something like the Marvel Team-Up w/Spidey & the Not Ready For Prime Time Players.

FWIW, you're not missing much with UXM #350. About the only things I remember from it are a really dumb character reveal on the last page and finding the turn of events (let's go to the Arctic for some reason, Gambit gets caught, trial!) really bizarre.

I'd also recommend reading a synopsis on Civil War if you're interested in the story. It's a concept with a lot of potential but the execution wasn't great. It's not terrible, but given the size of the story and the financials behind collecting it I would recommend skipping it. Unfortunately it's not one of the big company-wide crossovers that you can just pick up the main trade for as you miss a fair amount of the more interesting and key events. If for some reason you do want to dump a lot of money into a big crossover, I'd recommend looking into House of M instead. It was a great read, but like Civil War you really need to look into the other trades to get the most out of it.

It may not need to be said, but don't read anything Frank Miller has written since Sin City. Unless you want the pleasant memories associated with reading TDKR sullied forever for some reason, then by all means go read The Dark Knight Strikes Again and All-Star Batman and Robin. Just don't say you weren't warned. I really wish his Daredevil stuff would get the digital treatment already, though. Been wanting to read that for quite awhile.

Speaking of Batman, Issue #13 - the first issue of Death of the Family was pretty good. might just have to add another subscription.

Have downloaded the current run of The Invincible Iron Man. gonna give some more super hero fare a try. not expecting too much though.

Where in the run did you start? The current story (The Future), or at the beginning of the current volume (The Five Nightmares)? Because everything I've read from Five Nightmares to Stark Disassembled, which is what I'm currently caught up to, has been excellent.

It's also worth tracking down Extremis if you haven't read it. Updates the origin story, redefines the status quo, and does some drastic stuff with the armor. If you're familiar with the first movie then the origin update will seem familiar, plus Iron Man 3 will incorporate Extremis. Basically, if you want to check out Iron Man's current iteration it's the place to start. It's a great read to boot, though if you want to get caught up really quickly you could watch the motion comic on Netflix or Hulu.

I'm starting on Five Nightmares. Gonna read this through till the current issue before I move on to anything else. Right now it's just filling a void as I've read most of the good X-Men story arcs.

Will check out the motion comic though.

That's too bad. For when I was reading, Claremont just wasn't introducing interesting new characters & Gambit was head & shoulders above the others. A friend & I were sitting around one day thinking about taking out walls with the baseball cards we were looking at & his power just seemed cooler & cooler.

Sorry if I've mistyped the message I was trying to convey, but I've already read Civil War. I liked it. If I were to add it to my book shelf, I would most likely just buy the TPB.

Like I said, I haven't bought a book in 15 years, so I stopped during the middle of Sin City:To Hell & Back. Don't even really remember what happens in it. Since my wife & I are finally under one roof, I really only have room for one thing; LPs. I've been going apeshit since the spring.

Just finished the adaptation of neil gaiman's neverwhere.... it was ehhh (he didn't adapt it himself). I feel a bit foolish for not having read the novel first, but I thought I would just be let down by the comic if I had read gaiman's original first. Kind of happened anyway.

Did a little digging over the weekend and found what I think is the whole of my comic collection, which is 99% X-Men stuff from the 90's. I mostly collected and flipped through for the art (which takes a considerable drop once Madueira showed up), so I sat down and actually read them for the first time. Maybe because it's the era I grew up in, but I don't see why Lobdell gets all of the hate and Nicieza gets so little. I read through most of the pre-Onslaught stuff that I have from that era and the two seem practically interchangeable. There are some confusing elements (the Elizabeth/Kwannon thing for example) and the overall entertainment quality of the stories isn't quite up to Claremont's stuff, but overall I don't find the writing much better or worse than Claremont's pre-ouster work on UXM (which I enjoy). And I don't even see much of a difference as far as story elements goes. There's more focus on mutant hatred, but the amount of action and character development seems about the same. Nicieza and Lobdell's character and relationship stuff seems to have more of a soap opera quality to it, but it's not something that bothers me too much. But I still find it odd that people complain so much about lack of character development during that era when the stories are primarily based on character relationships and, well, character development. If there's one difference I have noticed it's that Claremont's work was driven primarily by storylines that built-up over tons of issues, whereas Nicieza and Lobdell's work is more episodic.

So what is that people hate so much about the 90's stuff? Is it a single element that I'm missing, or a combination of things about the titles, or was it something about the industry as a whole at the time?

I'm not terribly well versed with him either, but what I've read of Grant Morrison's JLA run has been fantastic and there's lots of J'onn doing neat stuff throughout. Check it out if you haven't read it.

I can't wait for the new Deadpool series to start. Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan are writing what seems to be Deadpool in a Ghostbusters-ish quest to vanquish the ghosts of dead ex-Presidents. Hijinks ensue.

Yes, that's Deadpool big game hunting with Teddy Roosevelt.

The rest of Marvel NOW! (such a stupid name for the event) sounds really awesome as well. I was originally planning on waiting for titles to settle into their stories, but the more I hear about them the more I want to just dive in head first. Fraction on Fantastic Four and FF, Hickman on Avengers, Waid on Indestructible Hulk, and Aaron on Thor: God of Thunder (Ribic's preview artwork has been jaw droppingly gorgeous so far) all sound really awesome. I'm a little wary of All-New X-Men because I'm not sure how I feel about the original team being brought forward in time, but what I've heard out of Bendis about it has me hopeful.

EDIT: Ribic art for Thor

And some excellent, veiny Leinil Yu art from Indestructible Hulk.

Neverwhere is one of the best things Gaiman's ever done IMO.

Has anyone read any of Sam Keith's Zero Girl series? Is it worth it?

I've only read the first 2 issues. I didn't think much of it either way. Might just be me, though.

I started a little collection lately. I'm more into vintage comics though from the 50's-80's. Just got this lately..

I've been really jazzed by Hickman's Fantastic Four/FF. I also really like Waid's Daredevil. I keep reading New Avengers 'cause I love Power Man and Iron Fist that much but every other issue has been a disappointment and the stories seem really randomly put together.

Batwoman has been fantastic, mostly because JH Williams' artwork is fuckin' breathtaking. Best art in comics right now. The New 52 Wonder Woman is pretty great too. I really like Batman Inc too, but it seems to be coming out at a snail's pace. The Before Watchmen has been well worth the time and money too, mostly for the Minutemen and Silk Specter series.

As usual, anything Hellboy/B.P.R.D./Lobster Johnson is right at the top of my list. The Goon is always a bast too.

Look for Atomic Robo. Good, funny stuff.

Love and Rockets is once a year now but all the characters feel like family to me, so I pick up each annual issue to check in.
