Looks like these is punk-metal days-

YESTERDAY - Power Trip / Mammoth Grinder / Iron Reagan / Ramming Speed

Power Trip is a pretty damn good band, sold out the show based on their broad appeal to punks (including the straightedge crowd which is abundant in my town) and metalheads. Band has a real heavy-duty chug, a real good listen in a packed out room. Tough guys too, some skag jumped up on stage and took too long posing preparing for a stage dive, singer flat-out kicked her in the back and sent her sailing, crumpled, back into the crowd. Mammoth Grinder sounded good as shit, Ramming Speed was doing their first show in a while and since some of the members moved to Richmond, and I even found myself entertained by Iron Reagan who have not really done much for me on prior occasions.

TOMORROW- Young And In The Way

Forecastle Festival kicked ass. Old Baby, Sun Kil Moon, Slint, Lord Huron, and Sharon Van Etten were highlights for me.

Not sure what our next show is going to be, I'd been planning a bunch of shows since the winter, and this was the last of our run. Going to look into who is playing around...

No Steely Dan or Clutch in the future, which is not too much of a bummer.

But I got The Life & Times & Deleted Scenes in September.

Than Pile & Speedy Ortiz in October.

Both Boston

For a 40 year old dude, married with two kids, that's a pretty big deal, cause I barely have time to take a shit now a days.

Looks like the next show is gonna be Ty Segall at Great Scotts in Allston!!!

A favorite venue of mine, saw Mikal Cronin there last year. It will be interesting seeing him step out of the limelight and just play bass in Ty's band. Same drummer too, she's pretty good...

Really, really excited to see Ty Segall, that cat has it going on...

Seein' some punk rock-

LAST- Poliskitzo / Rayos X / Leather Daddy - a couple of really good latin punk bands from LA, Poliskitzo especially had some cool lead action that was well above par. Leather Daddy is local Richmond fetish-punk

NEXT- Raw Power / Wartorn / Unholy Thoughts / Asylum - classic Italian hardcore band currently touring the US

Outer space bands this week-

LAST- Parliament-Funkadelic

Fantastic show. Ultimate funk/rock display. Last time I saw them 4 years ago it was weak so I almost didn't go, but it was a beautiful summer night and the show was only $20. So glad I went, they were absolutely amazing. George Clinton came right out at the beginning and belted it out onstage for the next 2 1/2 hours. Many awesome jams. Michael Hampton playing Maggot Brain. Huge band throwing down all over the place. Unbelievable. Best P-Funk show I've seen since the 90's.

NEXT- GWAR - BQ

GWAR
Body Count
Hatebreed
Misfits
The Meatmen
Goatwhore
Iron Reagan
Kepone
Loincloth
Noisem
Occultist
Revocation
Fuckface Unstoppable
Eat The Turnbuckle

First GWAR-BQ since the untimely death of Dave Brockie. Mike 'Beefcake' Bishop is taking over as frontman. All-day fest at a waterpark, should be interesting to say the least.

Shit, that Ty Segall show sold out INSTANTLY. Great Scott never even had a chance to print tickets. I figured as much, he's a pretty big name, and it's a pretty small venue. I tried to pull strings and get a couple tickets, though I'm not in the "in crowd" anymore.

No biggie, thinking about going to the Boston Calling festival. Fucking great lineup, The National headlining the first night, plus Neutral Milk Hotel. The second day is a little weak, though Volcano Choir is playing, and they are really awesome. Their second album is a favorite of mine.

Third day, The Replacements, Spoon, and The War On Drugs make it pretty worthwhile.

LAST- King Crimson was mindblowing, greatest progressive rock band of all time, anyone who has a chance to see one of their shows better do so. Most attentive and appreciative rock audience I have been in for a long time, maybe ever- no knuckleheads, posers or loudmouths. Beautiful venue in Philadelphia. Band features early 70's sax/flute player Mel Collins and is doing a great deal of 70's material including songs not played for 40 years or never. Loud. Three drummers including Bill Rieflin from Ministry/KMFDM and Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree. Fripp is a monsterous rock guitar player. Superb.

NEXT- few smaller shows coming along this week- Full of Hell / Noisem / Occultist on Tuesday, AmRep movie screening Wednesday, Richmond Punx Picnic starting Thursday throughout the weekend- Crimson Scarlet, Lost Tribe, Aspects of War, Who Killed Spikey Jacket, Liebestod, No Tomorrow, Survival, Animal Mother, Nightfall + more.

Right now, Watching Lo-Pan at TT The Bears absolutely crush it in Cambridge, MA. Wasn't even a big fan, but heard they are real tight live. Holy shit

actually made it to 2 different shows last night....

Lo-Pan as mentioned above. Monstrous, really impressed. Top notch musicians, especially the bassist tearing up that Rickenbacker. At times, the music was almost proggy, in a really aggressive time changing way. The high register vocals had kind of kept me away from this band before. Wow, does it sound good in person.

Image

As soon as Lo-Pan set was over, I left ...walked around the corner to The Middle East upstairs, and caught The Life & Times from Chicago. solid as fuck loud/heavy/hookey spacey rock.

Image

Quite a night of rock in Cambridge, Mass.
40 year old beat as shit today

LAST- A couple of pretty cool bands from Portland last night, Drunk Dad and Honduran. I preferred Drunk Dad, they had some lead action going on that was real good.

NEXT- AmRep movie tonight, either Crimson Scarlet / Lost Tribe or Bootsy Collins tomorrow (Bootsy is a 100-mile drive so still contemplating that, last show of his I saw in 2012 was fantastic though).

Kid Congo was so fukkin' good in Indianapolis & Columbus, we will see him on the 27th in Cincinnati. His band is a showband, too. The guy who played guitar & organ quit & Mark Cisneros has picked up the slack. The good news Mark is great. The bad news is that he only plays guitar & they don't play a song like "Our Other World", which really needs the organ sound.

Kid Congo is such a sweet guy, too. He was playing in the Cramps when he was 20 fukkin' years of age! Got me beat, that's for sure.

Mullett, I regret not picking Kid Congo, I've seen him a couple of times and balked on the price of admission this time since there were other options. I did get a message from my pal doing sound that said Kid made a nice statement acknowledging the work of Lux and Ivy after doing an 'impassioned' version of 'Garbageman'.

I ended up seeing the experimental show.

LAST NIGHT- Nu Depth / Father Finger / Chickeltte / Flood Beast / Light of the Cross LVX

TONIGHT- Slaughter & the Dogs / Southside Stranglers / Cloak/Dagger / Eurotics
