Maybe with electronic elements ...
You know, something thick, maybe a little progressive .. samples or keyboards. You guys know anything like that? Thanks in advance ..

Would Zombi qualify as dark melancholic "Post-Rock"? Some would say they're more progressive rock rather than post-rock, but I would say they draw from both.

Mogwai, though I'm not totally sure what post-rock is. I tried to embed some youtube but it wouldn't work.

The albums I'd most recommend are Happy Songs for Happy People and Come On Die Young.

Mono
Garden Sound - Black Summit
Implodes - Black Earth
Dead Letters Spell out Dead Words (all Thomas Ekelund stuff is about as dark as it gets)
Sounding the Deep - Night

want some stuff on the darker ambient/noisier stuff, which is close, with even less rock structures..

Huere Grav
William Fowler Collins
Higuma - Pacific Fog Dreams
Rafael Anton Irisarri - Reverie
Thisquietarmy
Tenhornedbeast

Though not defined as 'dark'..Mark Mcguire's stuff is pretty spot on post rocky goodness

Thank you all for your input. I have plenty to listen to now;)

I heard two Mogwai records ... one I liked one I didn't. The one I liked I listened to for about 2 weeks. The one I didn't I listened to two times. Like Charlie Bucket says ... "no, not 200, just 2".
When I say "rock" I men like post-punk rock. Like, minimalist type with warm and throbbing low end on bass. But not "stoner" guitar tone. Like, mild to moderate distortion and thick reverb or delay on the six strings. With bleeping or scathing electronic accents. And keyboards that fill the air with lifting but sorrowful atmosphere.

Thanks again:)

Damn, that band reminds me of my old project ... not note for note or anything. But in atmosphere and mood. I'm gonna have to look into these cats. I do think I remember hearing thier names mentioned before.

Note: This is the first song I ever played guitar on with other people involved. I did songs alone, but this is the first I did with a "band". If you consider me and a bass player a band?

I'd add Maserati to that last based on your description of what you're looking for:

Implodes is fucking awesome. So far ... I really like them. Real simple 2 or 3 note melodies over and over ... really nice atmospheres too. I wonder what their music is all about?

Hey Trout, can you locate me a link of Implode's lyrical content? I searched myself and can't find anything. This is very important to me. I'm in love with this project. Very inspiring indeed.

Godspeed You Black Emperor should be your first destination, start with f#a# and work forward...
Labradford
Bohren & Der Club of Gore (not post-rock, but better than most stuff that is)
Slint
The For Carnation

... more when I feel like it. Used to be neck deep in this stuff before the entire genre turned into a bunch of indie kids trying to rewrite Explosions in the Sky albums. Lots of overrated shite out there too (Mono, about half of Mogwai's discog) unless you don't mind hearing bands recycle the crescendo as their one and only songwriting idea.

Yeah Luke, I feel ya. I almost want all bands I listen to, to NOT be american. The trendy type of guys that look like bikers without every riding motorcycles. Or you know, with just a mustache and a trucker hat? Or flannel shirts and thick black framed glasses ... I hate those people. They always smell real bad too. That's why I stick with the European bands. Not that they can't get trendy though, because obviously they can. But most times american rock bands have "stinky hippie" engrained in their "American Indie RnR" fabric.
And the only reason I bring up "dress" or "appearance" is because I see a behavioral pattern that matches with it. A big part of a live performance (to me) is visual aesthetic. A bunch of goobers with just mustaches or beards, Gibson SG's, black glasses and flannels. Who will probably be doing some other form of music real soon.

Well... most of those bands I mentioned are Americans. Godspeed was from Canada, Bohren from Germany. Godspeed are a bunch of liberals so maybe stay away? But they're the best the genre has to offer, musically. And the bandleader is an anti-Zionist Jew, so maybe there's something for you to hang your hat on. What I was talking about was more the idea that post-rock used to be an idea/approach and was pretty musically diverse, and after The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place it became about writing albums that would make your girlfriend cry/play well in episodes of "The OC." That's the sound most people identify with the genre now, and it's sad.

Yeah, I have Club of Gore's "Black Earth", or is it "Dead Earth"? I was just listening to it recently. I like it well enough. And ironically, the rare few people that have seen my old band live (at practice) say they hear a Godspeed influence. Even though I haven't listened enough to get influenced by them. I know Godspeed, they're good, but too clean for me. "Anti-Zionist Jew" huh? Well good for him. We need more like him, outspoken about it.
Implodes reminds me of a Rock version of Urfaust a little bit. And I worship Urfaust. I could listen to them all day everyday. I spin em' at least once a week.

No, not yet. Is it good? I liked them a little before. But I heard too many nu-metal riffs. And they are "squeaky clean". Is the new one a "must hear"?

I used to make industrial songs on my computer and when they were done, if I did "too good" at recording the tracks ... which I mostly always do with a "line in" approach .. i'd go back and plug in my guitar and lay it on the speaker and do a track of static/noise over the entire duration of the song. I can't stand that sterile sound. On "most" stuff.
