R.Snart, yeah...TLAT definitely delivered when I saw them at O'Briens last fall. That was during the brief stretch, that Rob Smith (drummer from Traindodge) was playing with them as a 2nd guitarist/keyboard/percussionist. So those songs from Tragic Boogie really came through well with the added depth of the band. The start of their set was pretty slick. The room was dark with most of the lights out or real low. Then just before TLAT play their first note, Allen stepped onto a pedal that turned on a group of low stage spot lights that illuminated the first say 3-4 feet off the stage floor including the bass drum, giving the sense of some grandiose atmosphere (on a budget) and they played "Pain Don't Hurt" right into "Confetti". Absolutely killer. Totally ripped, and loud as hell. First show that I had some post day ear ringing in a while. If I were never able too see 'Fanastic Planet' era Failure, I got to think this was pretty damn close.

Actually made some mid America post rock purchases this past weekend. First music buys in a while.

Buildings - Melt, Cry, Sleep cd
Medications - Completely Removed cd
Roomrunner -S/T EP tape (yup, tape. Thanks Neutron, that band rules)

feeling nostalgic for some sleezy 90s chicago pop rock?

been listening to the recent Urge Overkill album this morning "Rock & Roll Submarine".
Not bad, kind of dirty with some decent hooks. Not "Saturation" good, but surprisingly pleasant.
see linky for a spin

I remember trying to like Urge Overkill in the 90s, but it just wasn't doing it for me. They were on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack as I recall.

it's easy to dismiss Urge Overkill from that cash grab Neil Diamond cover hit.

try to set that aside, and check out "Saturation". Start to finish, a solid album, with some good rockers "Postive Bleeding", "Woman 2 Woman", and especially "Erica Kane"

you'd probably be most familiar with their brief hit "Sister Havana" linky below, pseudo rockstar outfits and posing not withstanding

For a good mostly instrumental listen, give the last Ring, Cicada full length "History's End" a spin on bandcamp. solid mid-west rock

Forgot about those guys. All I have is the one you sent me, ""Good Morning Mr Good".

Free download on this one! And it sounds just as sweet.

yeah, I've always dug those Ring, Cicada dudes. that last album sounds about as good as "Good Morning", which is nice record in itself.

Here's a band I think fits this thread title's history pretty well, and a group I'd never heard of before until recently.

Table (early 90s from Chicago). classic chicago noise, mix in some midwest math, and add a little lower east side NYC, maybe even some 'Louisville influence'. I'm not real found of the wet paper snare drum, but they has a pretty cool style. Not much on the web about them, but found a mehspace

Lucky bastard, you get 2 shows in Chicago, now with Ring,Cicada opening (all due respect to Sweet Cobra...who I generally like on the merits of the album "Bottom Feeder", but I'd much rather see Ring Cicada open). Nothing in Boston, and I can't make the 8/11 NYC gig. Mr Neutron, you must report a live review. Please

Fuck me, Story of The Sea the other opener on that added Subday show. I saw them open up for Traindodge and Roma 79 in Connecticut a few years ago. They were killer indie rock with moments of loudness, lots of hooks with a hint of pop songwriting, and even some instrumental passages ala Don Cab. Really cool band from Minneapolis.

Shiner
Ring, Cicada
Story of The Sea

That's about as good a Midwest rock line-up as it gets. Neutron you may want to trade shows.

That does sound pretty sweet. I was just listening to "splay" the other day.

if you ever dug those 'slowcore' bands like Slowdive, Low, Codeine,etc...

there's a current band out of Michigan called shores.

I wasn't generally into that type of slow and low rock, but I kind of dig these guy's
sound.

spin for yourself, very mellow

That's the best thing I've heard off No Idea in a couple years. I feel like they went into a slump a little bit.

giving the latest The Life and Times LP a spin called "No One Loves You Like I Do"

another somewhat corny album title..but whatever.

first impression, it's pretty strong. These guys haven't hit the Shiner altitude yet and I don't expect that to happen, but I like how they've progressed. Good for Allen to try something a little different anyway.

spinnage below

speaking of Medicine...and the Jesus and Mary Chain,

here's an indie rock, 90s shoegaze worship group out of Austin, TX called
Ringo Deathstarr. Prob not enough for me to make a purchase, but certainly has some catchiness.

Really liking this revisit of St. Elias's Altered Beast EP. It's very melodic & has some cool build ups.

Also, thanks for the heads up on the new The Life and Times. It totally slipped my attention. I picked it up and I think it's good. It seems like one of those albums, though, that will need repeated listens before it becomes "great". Tragic Boogie was like that for me, too, though.

yeah Jason, I was completely addicted to both the St. Elias EP, and their first full length 'Believe It' for quite a while. Young dudes from Denver that have some obvious worship for Failure, Hum, Shiner, etc.

I actually dug "Tragic Boogie" from the get go, although the second half of that album kind of loses momentum pretty fast, the first 7 songs are quite solid in my book. "Suburban Hymns", their previous full length...actually took a while to warm up to that one, but I eventually grew to like it on a whole. What I've heard so far of "No One Loves You Like I do" is pretty solid.

I've been spinning this Shores album "To Volstead" a lot. REAL mellow, but cool songwriting. It's like Morphine meets Codeine.

Also, the Buildings album "Eat, Cry, Sleep" is a beast. Solid noise rock from the Twin Cities.

Mid-West rock continues to pwn me.

I wanted to like "Tragic Boogie" but ultimately couldn't ever get into it. Did give this latest one a shot though and I am enjoying it, especially the first half.

Saw the michigan band Shores in Boston a couple weeks ago. Really killer stuff, like Slint combined with Hum....really mellow note progression building up to space rock explosions. Highly recommended, if you are into that stuff. Their stuff is on bandcamp. I've been listening to their album "To Volstead" on repeat for a few weeks now.

This is a request reminder to the one Mr Neutron for some Shiner reviews from the upcoming Chicago shows. What I've read of the NYC show this past Saturday, sounds like they were excellent. I've been revisiting the Ring, Cicada albums recently, I'd go just to seem them. Jealous to say the least.
