not what I expected from a band with a guy from 16, and a guy from pelican. Pretty darn good.

Listening to this now and really liking it so far. Thanks for posting.

They definitely have the Pelican thing going...the vocals were a surprise, not sure how I feel about them, but it gives it something a little different.

The drummer is the only one from Pelican. The guitarist who doesn't sing was in Shift, so it all kind of makes sense now.

Not a huge fan of Shift, although I'm surprised they don't get a mention here because they were a part of that NYC scene, and they were fairly well known.

We talked about Shift on the old board. "Spacesuit" is the only album of theirs I really liked. Some people I knew in school were into "Get In", but I thought the vocals were too rock star over the top on that album.

I'm a fan of Shift, myself. I like Get In maybe more than Spacesuit. I listen to it more, anyway.

I lost track of this thread a long time back, but I need to catch up. Lots of stuff I'm sure I'll dig in here.

I think v.2.0 is getting a second wind. I've noticed kind of a 2nd wave of mid-west type rock happening across the heartland. Still got The Life and Times, Self-Evident, and Traindodge due with yet another full length on the horizon. But there's a next generation coming along now...Buildings, Shores, Pile, Roomrunner and more carrying on the indie torch. I like what I am seeing.

That arctic sleep is a big more 'pelican-esque' but still draws most of its influence from the mellower Jesu stuff. Not a whole lot different from their last album (earth to earth)

That Open Hand album was a favorite of mine when it came out. Pulled it out recently and it still holds up. That is a perfect case of a band stepping up their game big time from the previous album.

Although these guys have a little bit of a fresh sound on it

Band called Frames from Germany.

Think Mogwai meets Mouth of The Architect. All instrumental

About a 15-20 minute drive for me. nice.

Neutron, I'm digging this too, been listening to this pretty constantly since I posted it. Very midwest space rock worship, but done pretty well. Kind of reminds me of The Stella Link a little too.

you friggin guys in the midwest with your plethora of solid rock bands. It makes me wonder still...why the mid-west? Nothing personal...just why did these elements of rock flourish so much in the farm land?

I liked this immediately from the first tune. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing, Dan.

No problem Jason....I actually ordered this CD last night, comes with 3 bonus tracks....one
of the bonus tracks is a Shiner cover of the song "Giant's Chair". pretty obvious where their influences come from.

I saw that on the site. I went with the download, so you'll have to let me know how those bonus tunes are, mkay?

I saw Arctic sleep, and Lybria the other night. I'll post a horrible "review" soon.

This is probably my favorite thread here, so please forgive this:

These guys are long time friends of mine (well 2 of 'em) recorded (at Matt Tabott's studio) & mixed by Allen Epley.
It isn't great, but there are some moments...

I've had the Lybria cd in my truck for a week now (with the bonus tracks). They didn't just put the extra 3 songs at the end, they mixed them into the 8 overall tracks, so it sounds more like an intended LP. good from start to finish. If these guys weren't actually quite good at what they play, I'd probably pass it off a little more, cause it's so midwest space rock worship it's uncanny, especially Hum, Shiner, and ESPECIALLY Failure (Fantastic Planet era). The Shiner cover of "Giants Chair" is solid too, not too divergent from the original, but classy. It just shows you how, you can not duplicate Paul Malinowski's bass style and tone. That's the difference.

Mr. Neutron....curious how Lybria translated live. No need for an indepth live show review, just interested in how the depth sounded?

not very well. the studio made the vocals tolerable... live they were better when buried
also... their drummer "couldn't make the show" so they played to macbook drums.

however, arctic sleep KILLED.

way too loud for the square eyeglass skinny jean crowd. they all backed way the fuck up, or left. couldnt hear a damn word keith sang, but the volume just made it good.
they come across better recorded, but great tones from those full stacks , and loud..
bought their new cd. first cd ive bought in 5 years or so....

also, those two bands were the first 2 on the bill, so we were out and drinking by 8:30.

lybria are kids, ill give them another shot.
arctic sleep are fucking men, ill see them every time i can. in a non-community center type place where they could be louder, and even more glorious in their volume. also maybe where folks would dig 'em.

i have crappy iphone pics. maybe i'll post 'em
