This is an awesome thread, but if I'm being honest, it fucking stress me out sometimes, lol. It's like, "goddamnit, another band I need to check out!". I just do not have the time! I need more time!

Yeah, that new Iron reagan is cool. Better than recent Municipal Waste.

So, not what we've been talking about recently, but does anyone by chance like The Doves?
I dug this out of my itunes mess, and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy 'lost souls'

I love Doves. I was just listening to Kingdom of Rust a few days ago. Lost Souls is the best, though.

Jeez. April & May are getting out of control. Never seen TLAT, and I could do without ever seeing Pelican again, but ....

Jucifer, Floor, Fu Manchu, that show, Wovenhand,Kvelertak, Torche, Goat, Clutch...
plus a few other interesting shows.

I've got some decisions to make, or i need to win the lottery.

^ not a Pelican fan eh? I was only a modest fan until I heard "What We All Come to Need". To me, that was when Pelican really brought it all together, really focused on good songwriting. Yeah, I get the heaviness of the first EP, but the hooks on WWACTN are all over the place. I also though they were fantastic the only time I've seen them (in Boston with Isis and Tombs)..and quite frankly, stole the show imo.

I think you dig Sweet Cobra, and I would def recommend seeing The Life & Times...live, they sound like the transition from Lula to Starless era Shiner meets Fantastic planet era Failure. Not quite the same hooks, but a cool experience non the less. Then you could duck out before Pelican't?

I used to like pelican a lot, and have seen them numerous times.
Maybe my tastes have changed, as I just don't enjoy them as much as I used to. I really dig the life and times a bunch, and the chance of seeing Pelican & Epley do 'final breath' live is enticing.
Just so many cool shows coming up, i have to choose wisely.

I'm not able to go to as many shows as I used to, and for some reason it seems like the Chicago / Milwaukee area can go 2 months without any shows i want to see, then 15 shows i really do want to see in an 8 week span.
I really shouldn't bitch about having so many options, but it sucks having to choose between cool shows when I just want to see them all.

gosh I'm a whiney bastard today.

Buildings
Shores
Disguised as Birds
Haunted Heads
Zebulon Pike
Droids Attack

Jealous

Wow, I like Pelican well enough, and saw that same lineup in Northampton. To me, Tombs stole the show and Pelican were by far the week link. The drumming was just awful, he was coming in off fills from the newer material like a beat late. To be fair, about half their set was fantastic and amazing, and about half was just way off to the point of being terrible. It was a strange live experience for sure.

Isis were pretty ho-hum as well.

St Elias, from Denver (band I was obsessed with for a while), is getting ready to offer up their 2nd full length on bandcamp. Couple tracks available for listen now, I especially like "Eklutna", very Traindodge homage.

The band that started this Version 2.0 thread.....Cellos, has another full lenth available as well. Classic Canadian noise rock. Not quite the same hooks as Kittens or Shallow, North Dakota, but pretty cool regardless

Remember when people were bagging on the drummer from Pelican so bad that he bailed out of Stonerrock? I do. Regardless, I wish I'd gone to that show.

As far as the hardcore/post hardcore, I pulled out Stillsuit's At The Speed Of Light the other day and it holds up pretty good. Long Island had it going on in the late 90s-early 2000s.

You gotta let me borrow some more stuff, that sounds intriguing. Did you ever pick up any Red Red Meat yesterday?

You didn't miss much at that show if you'd seen Isis before. I'd seen them a ton, it was by far the weakest, ho-hum, going through the motions set I've seen out of them. Pelican was just strange, the dichotomy between the awesomely performed songs and the terribly executed ones was bizarre. Tombs were worth the price of admission, they're still going strong though. I'd recommend checking them out at some point.

The drumming in Pelican is pretty tedious on the first couple of albums.
Larry does a better job in Aeges, IMO.

new St. Elias full length completely available on bandcamp now, it's a really cool listen. Gathers up what thev've done on the 1st full length and EP, and feels like a complete album. More Shiner & Traindodge than ever. Recorded by Allen Epley & Eric Abert of The Life & Times.

There's times when I'm feeling the 90s that I think this is the best stuff...but I tend to go with "Truth" because it's a double album. And I still don't have the latest one.

That St. Elias is decent, if a bit similar from track to track. I may give it another listen later.

for the band at a high level and consistency of an album, I'd still pick out "On a Lake of Dead Trees" as their best. Although "The Truth" was the first Traindodge album I bought, so there's certainly some sentimental value there for me. Some really killer tracks, but does contain some filler (for a double album).

Their last "I am Forever" is a good album, although not extremely memorable. I have a feeling this next full length will be a strong return to form.

pretty off-topic even compared to the stuff we've discussed to date....

but does anyone remember Squarepusher?

the album "Feed Me Weird Things" linked below in it's entirety.

pretty interested, avante garde jazzy/groovy breakbeat type shit. I probably like this
more now than I would have back in '96 when this came out.

I always thought of Squarepusher as being in the same (or similar) camp as Aphex Twin, though maybe not as eclectic?
