Finally picked up that Aeges album...pretty awesome. Definitely heavy in a Torche manner with plenty of Life And Times meets mid 90s post hardcore. Basically just what I thought it would be. Although I was a little confused as the guy from Shift is credited on the album but seems to be not mentioned on the Facebook bio. Also there was a previous band including that guy and the drummer (Larry Herwig) called San Angelus? Did we talk about that? Which actually sounds just as good, but more on the crunchy-poppy, mid 90s rock side.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned these guys before, but this is the band formed by former members of Riddle of Steel and Shame Club.

Pretty similar to Riddle of Steel, maybe even more early 80s rock influenced

yeah, as far as I know, Shame Club is done, like 1-2 years ago. Too bad, that's a band I wanted to see live

Bummer. I have Bad Idea Realized, and enjoy it.

Windbag is the best Kiss / Husker Du crossover song you never knew you needed.

We ever talk about the San Diego bands Pinback or Three Mile Pilot before?
Been checking out Pinback today. Kind of cool indie rock, reminds me of El Ten Eleven a bit.
Anyone own any albums of either band?

Decent Pinback song below;

I have on TMP release which is from 2000 and I can't remember what it's called ...

I'm not up on Pinback at all. Are they part of the Rocket From the Crypt family or a different deal altogether?

No different family. Pinback had dudes from Three Mile Pilot.

Rocket shared dudes with Drive Like Jehu, especially John Reis.

San Diego....The Kansas City of the West in the 90s?

some huge Hum worship here:

http://ghost-circles.bandcamp.com/

also, evidently last sept. Hum did one of those spur of the moment "reunion" shows.
wish i'd have known about it. i would've made the trek to Champaign to see them.

Finally picked up the first Rival Schools album yesterday, after hearing a pretty rocking tune, "Used For Glue", that really stuck with me. Was a little underwhelmed at first, honestly. It's a bit all over, some of the tunes are more heavy/rocking than others. After a few spins, after my pre-listening expectations were put to rest, I'm really liking it.

Also picked up the reissue of Sunny Day Real Estate's Diary. Sounds a bit fuller, nice packaging, some additional liner notes, and there are some cool bonus tracks. I'm a sucker for that early emo sound, these guys ruled.

"Holding Sand" is my fave from United by Fate.

It's a good album but kind of uneven compared to the mighty Quicksand. Have you heard Walking Concert? You might like them, too.

That is what I think threw me for a loop at first, it's kind of all over the place. "Holding Sand" is definitely the most Quicksand sounding track, and the heaviest.

I know that he did Walking Concert after Rival Schools. I'll probably check them out next.

My favorite tracks off the first Rival Schools were definitely not the rocking ones. "Everything Has It's Point" and "World Invitational" were the real classics, more than a decade after the fact they still sound perfect to me. Nothing really bad on the album, some tracks I tend to skip. But there were also Quicksand tracks I didn't like that much. It's true!

I've been spinning it a lot, and I like all the songs, although I'm not as into the extra mellow track early on in the album. It's just a little long where most of the others are short and immediate.

I've been following the music blog 'Built on a Weak Spot' pretty regurlarly over the past 3-4 years. The dude that runs this has good taste for noisey, post rock, post punk type of stuff, and always revealing some fresh sounding bands.

link is to his top albums of 2012, a few that had caught my attention as well (Pile, Multicult, Tilts, etc.)

Cool, thanks for posting man! I've got three days off, and am going to try to get pretty deep into this material.

First I'm going to revisit the Handsome album today. I remember really liking the first song, however, I didn't think it had a lot of depth when I first got it. We'll see how time has changed my opinions.

Alright, ended up hanging out and jamming with friends most of yesterday, so didn't get too deep into that blog.

I did revisit the old Handsome album, and I like it better than when I first heard it, which was admittedly when I had dedicated my listening almost entirely to the "stoner rock" of the times. It's actually pretty consistently song-writing wise, and has some great riffs throughout. Tom Capone's guitar playing is awesome as always.

Wanted to add a local band you guys might dig:

http://kordova.bandcamp.com/

They list Husker Du as their only influence, which is obviously awesome, though the sound is pretty in line with the post-hardcore sounds I dig so much. It's Clay from Black Pyramid's new band, only two songs so far, this really has a lot of potential and is the most exciting band from Western MA I've heard in a long time.

Have you heard the band Speedy Ortiz making noise out there?, they are from Northhampton, MA. Very 90s indie/grunge rock worship with female vocals, maybe comparison is....The Breeders meets Dinosaur Jr. (just less fuzz)

Yeah, a lot of people talk about them favorably, and I think I know some of the people in the band from past projects. I've heard a couple songs online, however, I've yet to see them live. One of these days I'll catch them.

Been listening to this band Grass is Green (from Boston) constantly over the past few days.
I had seen their name popping up constantly on show listings in beantown, but kept ignoring them (due to dumb name, my mistake). Really good off-kilter rock with unique vocals. Tough to compare them to someone, but maybe Lula Divinia era Shiner meets 90s era The Flaming Lips.

Skip right to the song "Riff Sibling" for a good example

Yeah, not bad at all. Definitely really cool vocals.
