I can't think of any remixes that have a reason to exist.

I can't condemn them in general, some are great. Remixes are like cover versions. If they don't add something new to a song they are pointless.

I haven't heard one add anything aside from some annoying programmed drum beat or some stuttering of the original vocals.

Every so often you'll find a diamond in the rough. Then again more often than not you're digging through pure shit.

I'll second the JKB remixes however, the man is just amazing.

If we're talking Reggae(which is where the remix was born and is referred to as version/dub/discomix), then I love them, one of my favorite things musically. If we're talking Disco/House/Hip-Hop/Jungle/Techno, they can often be really good. Rock songs being remixed can often suck, but can be really good depending on who is doing the remix.

There was a remix of a Pelican song that was good, I think it was a remix of Angel Tears (by J.K. Broadrick, so there ya go). Other than that one, I never thought any were worth much.

I've never heard a remix that wasn't terrible. I'd like to point out that crappy freak on a leash remix they played on the radio 24/7 back in the day is what made me quit listening to the radio and search for newer and better music. You could say remixes are so bad they inspired me to find good music.

I don't see people offering up any good examples.

Remember Rosetta Stone, the band? A handful of decent remixes of their stuff pop into my head as I think this through. They're all I can think of currently, but evidence to my mind that remixes can be cool, although I generally detest remixes when I hear them. They seldom capture the initial emotion & power of the original, probably because they're generally done by some third party who's more of a technophile than a musician and has no eminent connection to the song's original inspiration. So I guess my two cents is that remixes can be cool, but the good ones are generally few and far between.

I can't stand any of that Bill Laswell remix stuff, that guy is corny as shit in general imo though, not a fan of anything he does really. Some if it looks good on paper, but the execution is usually weak.

On the top of my head:
Stereo Mcs remix of Trickys "Makes Me Wanna Die"
Kruder & Dorfmeisters take on "Bug Powder Dust" by Bomb The Bass
Leftfields version of "Renegade Soundwave" by Renegade Soundwave
are all great.
As for rock/metal-songs Trent Reznor did interesting mixes of Megadeth' "Symphony Of Destruction" and Queens "Stone Cold Crazy" (now L.Ron is coming after me) and J. G. Thirlwells Xanax-mix of Prongs "Prove You Wrong" is worth mentioning too.
But I have to admit that those 90s industrial-style-mixes didn't age that well.

Heh heh, I've certainly made no secret for my disdain for all things Trent Reznor-related over the years.

I like the remix of Deep Purple's Machine Head a lot and am looking forward to hearing the new remix of Come Taste The Band. The new remix of Iggy's Kill City is pretty good, too.

I think that usually they're interesting, but most of the time, that's about it. The thing is about mixes that have been considered "wrong" for ages (ie: Metallica "And Justice For All", some punk records, etc), is that those flaws are what makes those albums right. I'm a firm believer in that you've only really got one shot at properly releasing that at the time.....the rest are just attempts to revise history.
