Don't get me started. My job should be great. Working as a journalist and writing about consumer electronics, movies and TV, even music sometimes. Good pay and even better benefits. But the layoffs and the promoting of incompetent morons make this place almost unbearable. I certainly have to think about new career choices because I don't think I'll last another year in this place.

I love my work, but it is seriously crippling me to edit photos. I have a carpal tunnel/tennis elbow thing going on that can't heal, because I'm just trying to get this thing started and shot a bunch of family photos for Christmas cards lately. I fear that eventually my arm will stop being of any use at all, and I'll just be screwed.

As long as I work for "The Man" i'll always hate my job, but at least it pays somewhat well.

I don't mind it. Getting up and driving there is usually the worst of it for me. People leave me the hell alone to get on with whatever I'm getting on with, and the young lady in the coffee shop is not only good looking and friendly, but drinks espresso shots with me.

What shits me, is occasional "team building" corporate crap. Sure, I'll play on the team. In a position where people tell me what they want and leave me the fuck alone, and not drag me into themed arvo teas, or dress up days. Arseholes.

I like the actual work I'm supposed to do. I can't stand the paperwork and jumping through hoops of fire to get it done.

For years I've had too little work, always filling one hole with the other when I got paid, now I have too much (or too difficult) work. For the past few months I've been translating English written by Italians. Their English isn't very good, and my understanding of electrical engineering is limited. Lots of work, but difficult to finish it fast, so the pay per hour is still low.

Anyway, it's better than rolling my thumbs.

bitch, bitch, bitch

I've decided to stop complaining about work. It's pointless. As long as they pay me I will participate in the "do this right away" followed by "thanks, but it turns out we don't need it after all" game. I used to get pissed off, but now I'm able to use a lot of the situations for song lyrics.

I worked 12 hours yesterday. Surprisingly there's still a shit ton of traffic in LA after 8 at night.

the TA slave labour regimen is about to kick in. i have extended office hours this week to talk students through the exams. this week, no one's coming, but i have to sit here just the same. odds are they'll pile in next week (like they did for the last exam). at least it'll fill the time.

then i have 3 days to mark 81 nine-page papers AND 81 in-class exams (10-15 short answer/essay questions). ugh.

and the quality of my written work continues to be on par with jotun's album covers. abominable.

I enjoyed my job when I first went to work for my current employer, but they slowly browbeat into into livable hatred with their endulgence into typical human condition type bullshit. I've decided that they are what they are and will never change. Since that epiphany I've been far more accepting of the situation. Go to work, do the job, don't talk too much, go home. Apathy can be very liberating.

That is the truth. I've just learned to accept that these yardapes are never going to think with their own grey matter. So now I just do it and move on. It's not worth the fight to put them towards personal responsibility.

Strangelight, my wife is a TA at Rutgers in the Political Science department. Every semester it's the same thing: a shit-ton of grading that keeps her from doing her own real work. I feel bad sometimes that that's what she has to go through to be in grad school.

Exactly. It's impossible to be disappointed if you have zero expectations, and it's difficult to get upset when you literally don't give a shit. My only regret is the number of years it took me to cultivate this attitude.

yeah, it fucking blows. i TA a history course, so i imagine the workload and work type is about the same. if i calculated the amount of hours i spend on TAing and then the amount i'm actually paid for it, it's well below minimum wage. and definitely stops me from getting my real work done.

From what I understand that's pretty much it. Indentured servitude. Good luck with the rest of the semester.
