Myspace is dying from bad marketing. Facebook has outpaced it of late because more people are accessing social networking sites from mobile devices, for which facebook is ideal because it runs so fast on smartphones & the like. The idiots at myspace, instead of realizing this, have chosen to become more like facebook thinking the issue to be a preferential quirk rather than a technological loophole. This goes without saying how bad an idea it is to completely mirror one's competitor. It's marketing suicide, but that's almost beside the point... almost. The new format may actually be a semi-lucid attempt at making band profiles load faster in light of the new tech, but it's too little, too late. They might've saved themselves if they'd remained loyal to what users they had left. If they had just held on, been conservative about their dealings, and stayed the course, the mobile technology would've caught up. But they chose to hit the panic button instead. What really pissed me off is the number of musicians & artists who relied on myspace for exposure & have now been left out in the cold. The new profile design was acceptable when it was merely an option, but it's bullshit to now have it foisted upon anyone who runs a music page (I run four). I haven't even bothered to beautify my new band profile since the forced change, partly out of laziness, but also because leaving my band profile that ugly hospital-white seems a fitting kind of silent protest, at least for now.

All agreed. MySpace hasn't really been that great for at least a few years now.....it USED to be great, but I think that it's just sheer numbers: the average music fan initially went there to keep up to date with their favorite bands, then lesser known bands started using it as a way to add people that liked similar bands, and a few years of that and it stopped being effective because everyone with a demo would start adding people with automators. There was a time about maybe 3 years back, where the music blog and podcast things really started popping up, and there was a renaissance of where the labels were dying, but there was this grassroots "we're all in this together" type mentality. I think that alot of those bloggers and bands found out that there really wasn't that much of an interest for that, so it became a passing fad to be a journalist or to try to act as some sort of taste guru to turn people onto acts that they'd never heard of. For every Obelisk or Invisible Oranges that have built up a sizeable respect in regards to grassroots and cutting edge journalism, there were lots of other people that got disenchanted about having to put the time into something (LOTS) where they weren't getting paid for it, and maybe they hadn't built up much of an audience, either. You see those MySpace pages littered with dreams and hopes....people that haven't logged into their account for a year or three. Kinda reminds me of the Angelfire/ GeoAtrocities revolution.....people got entranced with it for awhile and then lost momentum for whatever reason.

After awhile, most people that used/ use MySpace just went back to what they really went there for anyways.....the acts that they'd heard of, just to tune out the noise of mediocrity. I had to turn off allowing band requests, because i'd get 10 or so a day, most of whom wouldn't reciprocate any sort of contact or trade requests....which was pretty bizarre, it was like bands were too lazy to even respond to people. Alot of those bands went on cruise control, expecting things to just roll in when they'd mass message people, but I think that it turned people the other way, generally.

Then MySpace, as you say, tried too late to be Facebook, and is way too slow, and I think that they're basically done. When MySpace was at the height of it's game, i'd spend more time on there than on my band's website, but I never abandoned my traditional website. Alot of bands have, and i'd always thought that was a mistake. Call it a hunch....this is that hunch. Bands stopped directing traffic to their traditional website, and that killed those websites off for good in some cases. But man, was MySpace a great way a few years back to augment a release for some crucial networking that just wasn't there 15-20 or more years ago. Facebook, in terms of networking for bands, still isn't close to the power of MySpace at full throttle maybe 4, 5 years or more ago....i'd met some awesome people there, in terms of trading for music and getting promos out there into the hands of writers and other people that would have never otherwise heard about what I do.

Let's face it, Myspace has had it, soundly beaten in every way. So what is the the site now for band profiles? (if there is one)

The last couple of times I was on there my computer got attacked by spyware, so I'm staying clear of the place now.

It sucks because seemingly 80% of the bands out there use that as their go-to online presence.

This admiration, sir, is much o' th' savour
Of other your new pranks. I do beseech you
To understand my purposes aright.
As you are old and reverend, you should be wise.
Here do you keep a hundred knights and squires;
Men so disorder'd, so debosh'd, and bold
That this our court, infected with their manners,
Shows like a riotous inn. Epicurism and lust
Make it more like a tavern or a brothel
Than a grac'd palace. The shame itself doth speak
For instant remedy. Be then desir'd
By her that else will take the thing she begs
A little to disquantity your train,
And the remainder that shall still depend
To be such men as may besort your age,
Which know themselves, and you.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light

Cowards die many times before their deaths;
The valiant never taste of death but once.
Of all the wonders that I yet have heard.
It seems to me most strange that men should fear;
Seeing that death, a necessary end,
Will come when it will come.
